Design ingestion for recovery
Choose batch, incremental loading, CDC or streaming from source capabilities and consumer freshness requirements. Define how initial loads, updates and deletes are represented. Document checkpoints, retries, deduplication and backfills; test what happens when data arrives late or a source changes its schema. These are architecture considerations, not claims about a specific internal deployment.
Separate storage layers from ownership
A lakehouse can retain source records, validate and normalize them, then publish consumer-ready datasets. Preserving source evidence helps replay and audit. Data mesh addresses a different concern: domain ownership, data as a product, self-service infrastructure and federated governance. A layered storage layout alone does not establish those responsibilities.
Make contracts operational
Describe structure, business meaning, ownership and quality expectations at producer–consumer boundaries. Version changes and agree a migration window for affected consumers. Validate before publication and continue checking actual data after publication: a valid schema does not guarantee timely or correct records.
Turn quality failures into decisions
Select checks for completeness, uniqueness, validity and freshness from consumer needs. For each failure, define whether to warn, quarantine affected records or block publication, and who resolves it. Keep rejected evidence available under an appropriate retention and access policy. Monitor pipeline failures separately from data defects; a successful run can still publish unusable data.
Serve more than ML
Publish discoverable datasets for reporting, analytics and operational use as well as features. Document semantics, access policy, lineage and support ownership. Decide on service objectives and operating cost before optimizing compute or adding a new serving system. This article is a conceptual checklist rather than an employment case study.
